A nod to our roots as a former biscuit factory.Today, we're a lively hostel and hotel where vintage design, live music, great food, and community spirit meet
our story
It all began in 2011
When a businessman and a set designer stumbled upon an abandoned biscuit factory in a quiet corner of Reykjavík while scouting for a film location. The movie they planned was never made, yet the vision for the set refused to fade. What if, they thought, this story could come to life in another way? What if the factory itself became a place where people from all over the world could gather with locals and feel right at home?
So they bought the biscuit factory.
And that’s how KEX was born.

Rich in history,
the building has seen it all
The scent of fresh biscuits once filled its halls, later replaced by the rhythm of a dance studio, and some areas even hosted an art museum… Today, it’s a vibrant hostel and hotel, fully renovated in 2025, yet still true to its creative roots. Furnished with salvaged materials and unique finds from around the world, KEX combines vintage industrial character with an eclectic, contemporary style
